Why can't I sponsor a specific Bible translation worker?

Due to security reasons and the enormous overhead it would create, we are unable to link specific donors with specific workers. The donor is linked instead to a group of workers in a region and gifts are allocated according to greatest need and amount of funds raised locally through personal contacts.

Does all my gift go to the field?

In line with other agencies we need to cover our operational costs and a percentage of funds raised are used for this purpose. Some of these funds are invested to generate future income and a small percentage is used for administration. In total, the amount deducted is 20% which compares favourably with other agencies. (Charityfacts.org research indicates actual charity spend on fundraising of 15% to 25% while NCVO research shows an additional average management and admin cost of 8%).

Can I write to the Bible translation workers?
Again, due to security reasons and the enormous overhead it would create, we are unable to allow direct correspondence with the workers. Most importantly, some workers must not be viewed as working for a 'foreign' agency, as this could severely hinder their work among the non-Christian communities and place their lives in danger.

How will I receive news about the workers?

What money is needed to fully support a worker?
It takes between £200 and £600 a month to fully support a Bible translation worker including family support. This varies according to area of world and personal circumstances. Workers have been able to raise between 25% to 60% of their support locally through their churches, friends and families. They are looking for matching funds of around £60 to £450 per month. This means we need several sponsors for each worker.

If I must discontinue my sponsorship, what happens to the workers I'm helping?
If you need to discontinue your sponsorship, we will look for a new sponsors for the workers from that area of the world and continue the support without interruption.

How is a worker's support calculated?
A worker's support is based on need not market forces! Needs depend on various factors; country and field location, family, children's ages, work related expenses, etc. Various factors are allowed and ranges set for each country in order to ensure accuracy. Support levels are discussed and agreed with local representatives, eg agency administration, church leaders, etc.
